I VEMPs: nuove luci, ombre antiche e vizi consolidati

Il seminario analizzerà l’esecuzione e l’interpretazione dei VEMPs che sono spesso accompagnate da dubbi e incertezze. Recenti revisioni della letteratura hanno riaperto il confronto scientifico, spingendosi fino a mettere in discussione la tradizionale specificità sacculare dei VEMPs cervicali e ipotizzandoli come possibile espressione complessiva dell’attività dei recettori labirintici. Si tratta di posizioni forti e controverse, talvolta percepite come provocatorie, ma elaborate da studiosi di indiscusso valore e in grado di sollecitare una riflessione critica sui limiti interpretativi e sul reale significato clinico delle nostre pratiche quotidiane.

Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology Surgeon in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, University of Malaya (Malaysia). 

She is a Lecturer and Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology Surgeon at the University of Malaya. She completed her postgraduate degree at the University Sains Malaysia and obtained Gold Medal. She has also been a Fellow of the European Board of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery since 2019. She completed an Observer Fellowship on Paediatric Audiovestibular at Alder Hey's Children's Hospital, Liverpool, United Kingdom. To date, she has over 140 peer-reviewed publications, including 40 research papers and she has reviewed over 200 publications. She is listed in the World's Top 2% Scientist by Stanford University in 2022. She is currently persuing her PhD research on Paediatric Vestibular and Balance. She has developed the first Paediatric Vestibular and Balance Clinic at the University of Malaya Medical Centre, which is also the first of its kind in the region.

Dr. Mikael Karlberg is an Associate Professor at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Lund University, Sweden, with over 35 years of experience. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of balance disorders and vertigo. Dr. Karlberg has authored over 60 articles in international scientific journals and co-authored the book "Det snurrar – Allt om yrsel och balanssjukdomar" (Bazar Förlag, 2023).
He is President of the Bárány Society and has served as the Scientific Secretary of the Swedish Society of Otorhinolaryngology. Dr. Karlberg is widely recognized for his contributions to research and clinical practice in vestibular disorders.

Dr. Stavros Hatzopoulos has been a faculty member of the Audiology & ENT Clinic at the University of Ferrara, Italy, since 1994. His background is in Biomedical Engineering and Hearing Science (BS from the University of Southern California, MSc from Texas A&M University, and PhD from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts). He received his habilitation as an associate professor in 2014. He is the author of more than 245 book chapters, peer-reviewed papers, and conference presentations. He has participated in numerous European Concerted Action projects in the fields of Otoacoustic Emissions, Genetics, and Nanotechnologies. His main areas of interest are clinical Auditory Electrophysiology, Teleaudiology, and Long-Distance Learning. Currently, he serves as the editor of the Portal on Otoacoustic Emissions and as the Managing Editor of the Hearing, Balance & Communication journal.
